The New Legal Highs: Caffeine, Pepper & Vitamin B
A variety of “post ban legal highs” are appearing on online headshops, they are sold in the classic colourful fun packaging, and are advertised as “not quite on the same level” as the pre ban chemicals, but will give you a good buzz with no comedown.
The ingredients list things like “1,3,7-trimethylxanthine”, N-(2,6-dimethylphenyl)-2-(piperidin-1-yl)acetamide, “Bioperine”, Vitamin B and Taurine as well as various other substances.
So how can these new drugs give you a “buzz” when every psychoactive substance is banned under the Psychoactive substances act?
This is because none of the ingredients are psychoactive, apart from “1,3,7-trimethylxanthine” which most people know as Caffeine which is exempt from the ban and of course is a stimulant drug, and therefore will give you a short acting “buzz”.
The other ingredients that some of the packs contain like “Bioperine”(an extract of black pepper) are added to give a burn/sting when you snort it, which is usually a part of the experience when snorting drugs, and part of what people like when they snort drugs. Although some of the post ban legal highs contain only caffeine.
These post ban legal highs are still sold by some online headshops as “Not for human consumption” even though legally they can be sold for human consumption because caffeine is an exempt substance and not a medicine, I would assume that this warning is added for effect, and as an attempt to re-create the pre ban experience of buying legal highs.
It's important to note that caffeine is a physicaly addictive drug and if used reguarly the user will develop a dependance.
